Resumen

Abstract: The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between pollutant emissions, economic growth and energy consumption in Ecuador for the period 1971-2010. The methodology is based in econometrics time series involving the same stationarity tests, vector autoregression (VAR) and Johansen cointegration was used. The results do not support the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis for the case of Ecuador; however, we can observe a monotonically increasing linear relationship, which states that GDP is associated with increased levels of CO2 emissions in the long term; with respect to energy consumption (EC) is an inverse relationship in the long term, in other words, as energy consumption increases, GDP decreases found. Given the relationship between environmental degradation and product for the Ecuadorian case and taking into account the empirical evidence developed, Ecuador should seek mechanisms to help sustain its economic growth process without compromising the environment.
